Database Description: Ei Compendex is a comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, the electronic equivalent of the print Engineering Index. Compendex covers the entire spectrum of engineering, in depth, with abstracts from over 5,000 international journals, conference papers and proceedings, and technical reports.

Each year, over 220,000 new abstracts are added from 175 disciplines and major specialties within these broad engineering areas:

Aerospace Engineering Engineering Geology Material Science
Agriculture Engineering & Food Technology Engineering Management Mechanical Engineering
Automotive Engineering Engineering Mathematics Metallurgical Engineering
Bioengineering Engineering Physics Mining Engineering
Chemical Engineering Environmental Engineering Nuclear Technology
Civil Engineering Fuel Technology Ocean and Underwater Technology
Computer and Data Processing Industrial Engineering Petroleum Engineering
Control Engineering Instruments and Measurement Sound and Acoustical Technology
Electrical Engineering Light and Optical Technology Transportation
Electronics and Communication Engineering

Historical Compendex: The historical file provides access to engineering literature published 1884-1968. Records in this file have subject headings that are not under the control of the current Ei Thesaurus. These records do not carry ISSN or ISBN, treatment codes or classification codes. Journal sources may be identified by journal abbreviations only, if the full journal name cannot be determined.

AUTHORS AND INSTITUTIONS

LABEL NAME EXAMPLES
.AU. AUTHOR wesela.au.
.EDIT. EDITOR asme and white.edit.
.IN. AUTHOR AFFILIATION robotics and case.in.

MEETING TITLE (.MT.): Title of the conference at which the paper was given.

MEETING DATE FORMAT 1 (.M1.): Date of the conference in the format year month day. Search on just year and month, because the month may or may not be repeated, e.g., 1998 Oct 18-21, or 2000 Jul 17-Jul 19.

MEETING DATE FORMAT 2 (.M2.): Date of the conference in the format month day year. Search month "with" year, because the month may or may not be repeated, e.g., Oct 18-21 1998, or Jul 17-Jul 19 2000.

MEETING LOCATION (.MC.): City, state or province, and country of meeting location.

MEETING SPONSORS (.SP.): Names of sponsoring organizations, with ANSI abbreviations.

CONFERENCE CODE (.CNFC.): A 5-digit code assigned to a conference. All papers from a conference have the same code.

SUBJECTS

LABEL NAME EXAMPLES
.SU. SUBJECTS electropolymerization.su.
.MAJ. MAJOR SUBJECT clouds.maj.
.ID. IDENTIFIERS (incoherent light).id.

SUBJECTS (.SU.): Subject headings, or index terms, assigned from the Ei Thesaurus. Using SU, you may search either complete subject phrases or individual subject words. SU encompasses both major and secondary index terms. The major subject, or main index term, describes the most important topic or central focus of the article or paper. Other subjects, or secondary index terms, describe concepts addressed in the article or paper, but not a primary or central focus.

MAJOR SUBJECT (.MAJ.): The main index term assigned to the article or paper. Using MAJ, you may search either complete subject phrases or individual subject words, to retrieve only records in which this is a major subject. The first subject heading that displays in each record is the major subject assigned to that article or paper.

IDENTIFIERS (.ID.): Non-controlled vocabulary, or free-language descriptors, used to the describe the content of the article or paper. Terms in this field are not taken from the Ei Thesaurus.

Additional subject fields are defined in the Compendex database, but are intended for system use. People are unlikely to use these fields for searching:

SUBJECT THESAURUS (.SUT.): This field is defined for system use when retrieving subjects through the thesaurus.

MAJOR SUBJECT THESAURUS (.MAJT.): This field is defined for system use when retrieving records through "focus" in the thesaurus.
