Database Description: The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) lists monographs, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, collections of essays, and doctoral dissertations published anywhere in the world. ABELL contains over 700,000 records in English and other European languages.

The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature has existed as a printed bibliography for over 70 years. The print version consists of 77 volumes beginning in 1920 and issued annually in printed volumes.

AUTHORS (.AU.): AU encompasses primary text authors, authors of reviews, authors of essays within collections or festschriften, and other people responsible for a work, such as editors, translators, and authors of introductions. Searching AU retrieves all kinds of author names, except for author being reviewed (AUTR).

Names are given in inverted order, last name first, followed by first and middle names or initials. All words are indexed. If you are unsure how the name is given, begin searching by surname only. For hyphenated surnames, use either surname or both.

PRIMARY TEXT AUTHOR (.AUTH.): Author or scholar associated with a primary text.

REVIEW AUTHOR (.RVAU.): Reviewer.

SOURCE AUTHOR (.SOAU.): Author of collection in which an essay appears. Searching an author name in SOAU finds the separate records for individual essays in the collection.

TITLE (.TI.): Title of journal article, book, collection, essay, or dissertation.

TITLE REVIEWED (.TITR.): Title of book being reviewed.

JOURNAL TITLE (.JN.): Journal in which article or review appeared.

SOURCE TITLE (.SOTI.): Collection in which an essay appeared. Searching a collection title in SOTI finds the separate records for individual essays in the collection.

PUBLISHING INFORMATION (.PUB.): For books and collections, PUB contains the publisher, place, and date. For dissertations, PUB names the university and date of degree. For journal articles and reviews, PUB contains the journal title, volume, date, and pagination. Omit stopwords when searching PUB.

YEAR (.YR.): For all types of material, YR provides the year of publication.

CONTENTS (.CON.): For festschriften and other collections, CON contains details of the contents, such as the author and title of each individual essay. Searching an essay title in CON finds the collection in which the essay is published. Searching an author name in CON finds collection(s) in which the author is published.

SUBJECTS (.SU.): Index terms assigned by the database producer to describe the subject content of the document. Subjects in ABELL consist of a structured hierarchy that may incorporate a broad subject area, time period, treatment, specific author, etc. Examples:
